Can Unanswered Prayers be a Blessing in Disguise?

Jessica Cox and Buzz Aldrin

Garth Brooks had a big hit back in 1990 with a song that said “some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers,” but is it really true? Usually, people are upset and disappointed when their prayers aren’t answered. However, some of those unanswered prayers can turn out to be exactly what a person needed at the time even if they were deeply disappointed by God’s “lack of response.” If you feel your prayers are going unanswered, this blog is here to help.

A “No” May Be Just What You Need

Have you ever wanted something really, really badly, only to realize much later that it would have been the worst possible thing for you? (Like a tattoo you really wanted when you were 18, for instance?) The same thing happens when it comes to prayer. The thing you think you really “need” may not be, and only God knows that at the time. It’s not until later that you realize that God did you a favor: and it’s important to make sure you thank him for it!

God Doesn’t Play By Our Rules

Romans 11:33 says the following: “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! how unsearchable are his judgments, and his ways past finding out!” Simply put, God’s will is mysterious! God’s way is not our way, which is an excellent thing from an ethical standpoint but also a very frustrating thing when it comes to figuring out God’s plan for us. You’ve just got to remember that God does the impossible, even when it seems impossible for us to understand!

No Matter What, Trust Him

You may not know for years the purpose God had in mind when he responded to your prayer with a “no,” and in all honesty, you may never know. It may have been done to protect you or someone you love from some danger you will never know about! This can drive you crazy, but only if you allow it to. A better idea is to simply put your complete trust in God’s plan for you, and I know this is hard to do! Trust takes practice, but practicing trust in God is easy when you realize that he will love you unconditionally and never let you down, even if you’re disappointed in the answer he gives you.
