Why Finding Your Waypoints Matter

Home | Inspiration | Why Finding Your Waypoints Matter

Resilience is a necessary trait to succeed in today’s changing world, no matter what field you are in. However, when it comes to problem-solving and maintaining resilience in the face of adversity, people who are not adept at these challenges may struggle to develop persistent perspectives. One easy starting point to help you adapt to different situations while you build resilience is to utilize waypoints. Waypoints are guiding traits formed from your existing moral compass that can help you find a starting point in problem-solving and decision-making by giving you a clear guide to staying true to yourself and using your values as inspiration.

The term waypoint comes from aviation. In aviation, a waypoint helps you stay on course, even when the weather changes or you need to reroute. You don’t always fly in a straight line, but you reach your destination by recalibrating around a series of intentional markers. The same is true in life. We can’t always move forward comfortably because we know exactly what’s coming, but we move forward anyway because we’ve chosen the values that can help guide us past any roadblocks.

My 9 Waypoints

Finding your waypoints infographic with: Adventure, Persistence, Support, Desire, Courage, Authenticity, Innovation, Balance, and Faith

Over years of traveling the world, speaking on stages, and learning to pilot with only my feet, I discovered nine guiding markers that keep my internal compass steady:

  1. Adventure
  2. Desire
  3. Courage
  4. Innovation
  5. Balance
  6. Persistence
  7. Support
  8. Authenticity
  9. Faith

These nine waypoints aren’t a secret formula; they are a personal constellation. Your own list will look different, and that’s the point.

How to Create Your Own Waypoints

  1. Start by thinking about the moments that shaped you, both the highs and the lows. What carried you through? What helped you grow?
  2. Write those values down. Name them. Define what they mean to you.
  3. Then narrow your list to five to nine. Keep it simple. Keep it real. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s clarity.

How Your Waypoints Can Help Guide Your Life

Once defined, your waypoints serve as touchpoints whenever you feel disoriented. A job offer might tempt you with status, but your compass warns you to pause, as it conflicts with your integrity. A new hobby could ignite your curiosity and joy waypoints, signaling it’s worth pursuing. During deep setbacks, gratitude and resilience shine a light on lessons learned, rather than losses suffered. Over time, you’ll notice an emerging pattern: choices guided by your waypoints lead to deeper fulfillment and more authentic success.

No plan is perfect, and no single strategy fits every journey. But by choosing and continually revisiting your own waypoints, you build a flexible navigational system that honors your values, adapts to life’s twists, and keeps you headed toward a destination defined not by external expectations, but by who you are at your core.
