In all the education, deep, revelatory discussions, and work that goes into diversity and inclusion, let’s never forget one of the most vital components – the celebration. Human respect, empathy, and compassion lay the groundwork for celebrating all of our differences, experiences, and individuality. With ERGs, you get a win-win – a passionate in-house group that helps facilitate both education and fun, enjoyable, and engaging events.
Employee resource group events can be a game changer if properly executed. Whether it’s a major or smaller event, let your ERGs take the reins and usher in a spirit of happiness and celebration into the workplace.
Celebrations are essential to the health and morale of the workplace. They give the much-needed break from the work itself, the pressures of profits and targets, and add the levity and joy that creates an air of comfort and inclusion that breathes life into an organization.
With the many holidays, special months, and cultural moments in history, your calendar will never go empty of moments to recognize and appreciate everyone around you. We have a few months left in 2022, and there are plenty of holidays and months of recognition you can participate in.
I’ve included a few tips to help your ERGs capitalize on those special moments that will fill your office with a renewed spirit.
April 27 – Show Your (Prosthetic) Mettle Day
July – Disability Pride Month
October – National Disability Employment Awareness Month
October 10th – World Mental Health Day
October 10th – Indigenous Peoples’ Day (formerly Columbus Day)
October 31 through November 2nd – All Saints Day/All Souls Day/Día de los Muertos
November – Native American Heritage Month
November – Movember, Men’s Health/Mental Health Awareness
December 3rd – International Day of Persons with Disabilities
December – Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa
Of course, this isn’t a comprehensive list; just a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing. You’ll find even more ideas in a quick Google search for historical figures, locally relevant events, and celebrations that apply to your specific organization.
Your ERGs are the ideal resource for developing celebratory events that are both informative and fun. They will include information about the holiday or commemoration and its significance, facilitate a culturally appropriate event, and develop something you can leave everyone with – a game plan, ways to support, or things to think about and reflect on.
For major events, nothing puts the multicultural cherry on the sundae like inviting a speaker. Professional speakers assist in consulting and development, but all lend a seal of credibility and authenticity to your organization and whatever style of event you choose to host. Fellow teammates contributing is wonderful. It creates community and elevates morale and trust, but what will capture everyone’s attention, hearts, and minds is a professional, highly skilled and insightful, charismatic speaker.
Follow these quick tips yourself and once you’re ready, reach out to discuss how we can collaborate to create events that will make your workplace happy, productive, and one where everyone feels seen, accepted, and celebrated.
